Dear YP’s and friends,
The quote “I know of no great man except those who have rendered great services to the human race” by Voltaire, accurately describes why it is our duty to be civically involved. Communities, are crafted by thoughts, ideas, intellect, belief and perceptions. In order to build a community that exercises its liberty to grow, thrive and maximize its full potential; we must give our service to the underserved.
I urge young professionals across all industries to make it your duty as a citizen and resident of Portland to render your skills and expertise through active participation in volunteerism. It does not matter if you’re from Portland or not, what matters most is that you are here right now at this moment. Until every young professional in our community understand the importance in being civically involved, we will continue to live in an unjust society. Just because one may aim to climb the career ladder, it does not alleviate the burden of the community that was left behind. I am thankful for the four years I’ve spent on the Urban League of Portland Young Professionals leadership team as fundraising chair and president. I look forward to seeing the new leadership team take the YPs to the next level.
